What Happens to the Soul After Death?

Many people have been taught that they possess an “immortal soul” that lives on forever after death. This belief is widespread across Christianity and nearly every world religion, yet the Bible never teaches it. Scripture speaks clearly about the soul, the spirit, and the destiny of our inner being—and it reveals a truth very different from popular tradition. This study examines what God’s Word actually says about the soul, whether it is immortal, and whether the spirit within us can truly die or be destroyed

What Does The Bible Say About Our Soul?

Can The Soul That Sins Actually Die For Eternity?

Satan's lie in Genesis 3:17—"You will not surely die"—has been repeated so many times that most people simply accept it as fact. Many sincerely believe their immortal soul or spirit essence will live forever after death. But is that what the Bible teaches?

Most Christians believe that when a good person dies, his or her immortal soul immediately goes to heaven, while sinners go to eternal punishing in hell. This belief is not unique to Christianity; nearly all religions teach that a spirit within us continues living after physical death. But is this true? Does our soul—the real me—actually live forever as an "immortal" being?

Surprisingly, the Bible never connects the word immortal with the soul or spirit within us. The concept is not found anywhere in Scripture. It was not taught by the apostles or the early church. Instead, the idea of an immortal spirit originated with Greek philosophers like Socrates and Plato, whose teachings later influenced early Christian thinkers such as Tertullian and Augustine. Over time, this pagan philosophy became widely accepted as Christian doctrine.

But is our “spirit,” our “being,” truly immortal? Can it be destroyed? Can it die? Does it live forever in heaven or hell after we die? What does the Bible actually say?

Does The Bible Say Anything About Eternal Life In Hell?

Can The Soul Die?

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

Paul makes a similar statement:

"The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." (Galatians 6:8, NIV)

Scripture draws a clear contrast: eternal life versus eternal death. The wages of sin is not eternal life in hell—it is death. Death is the cessation of life, not life in another form. When the spirit dies, it ceases to be.

Eternal life is a gift from God through Jesus Christ. Immortal life is the opposite of death, and Scripture repeatedly states that the soul can die. God emphasizes important truths by repeating them:

Ezekiel 18:4 — "The soul that sins shall DIE."

Ezekiel 18:20 — "The soul that sins, it shall DIE."

Psalm 56:13 — "For You have delivered my soul from DEATH."

Psalm 78:50 — "He did not spare their soul from DEATH."

We have a choice. Our spirit can choose life and an everlasting covenant with God:

Isaiah 55:3 — "Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall LIVE."

Psalm 119:175 — "Let my soul LIVE, and it shall praise You."

Our spiritual self living is the opposite of it dying.

Scripture also shows that we can destroy our own soul:

Proverbs 6:32 — "Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys his own soul."

What Did Jesus Say In The Bible About Our Soul, Our Spirit Being Immortal?

Jesus made the truth unmistakably clear: the soul can be destroyed. It is not inherently immortal.

"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matthew 10:28)

Jesus plainly states that the soul can be destroyed. Destroy means to put an end to the existence of something. When your spirit is destroyed, it is gone forever. That does not sound immortal.

So why do so many Christians believe this doctrine today? Because Greek philosophy infiltrated the early church, and tradition eventually overshadowed Scripture. But the Bible is clear: the soul can die.

The question now is—what will you believe? The traditions of men, or the inspired Word of God?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bible teach that the soul is immortal?

No. The Bible never uses the word “immortal” to describe the soul or spirit within us. Immortality is only attributed to God and is offered as a gift to believers through Jesus Christ—not something humans naturally possess.

Can the soul die?

Yes. Scripture repeatedly states that the soul can die. God says plainly, “The soul that sins shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4, 20). Death is the opposite of life, not life in another form.

Where did the idea of an immortal soul come from?

The concept of an immortal soul originated in ancient Greek philosophy, especially through thinkers like Socrates and Plato. Their teachings later influenced early Christian writers, but the doctrine is not found in Scripture.

Does Jesus say the soul can be destroyed?

Yes. Jesus taught that God can “destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). Destroy means to end existence—not preserve it forever in torment.

Do humans automatically live forever after death?

No. Eternal life is a gift from God through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). The Bible contrasts eternal life with eternal death. Only those who belong to Christ receive immortality.

Can a person destroy their own soul?

Yes. Scripture says a person can destroy their own soul through sin and rebellion against God (Proverbs 6:32). Our spiritual choices determine whether our soul lives or dies.

Does the Bible teach eternal life in hell?

No. The Bible teaches eternal life for the saved and eternal death for the lost. The wages of sin is death—not eternal life in torment. Destruction is the final end of the unrepentant.
