Many Christians celebrate Christmas with sincere hearts, yet few have ever examined what the Bible actually says about the holiday. With its deep pagan roots, later church traditions, and the absence of Christmas in apostolic practice, believers often wonder whether these customs truly honor God. This study takes a clear, Scripture‑based look at the origins of Christmas, how the early church worshiped, and whether God accepts worship mixed with ancient pagan traditions.
If what you believe about Christmas is not actually true, would you want to know? Many Christians have never examined what Scripture says about celebrating the birth of Jesus or the origins of the customs used today. Rather than relying on tradition or the teachings of men, this study encourages you to look directly at God’s Word and see what the Bible actually says about Christmas.
If you are searching for Bible verses that support celebrating Christmas, you will not find them. Scripture never commands, endorses, or even mentions celebrating Jesus’ birth. Instead, the Bible repeatedly warns against adopting pagan customs and traditions.
Many Christians tell their children the Santa Claus story, believing it to be harmless fantasy. But Scripture is clear that lying — even “innocent” lies — is sin. When parents teach their children that Santa Claus exists, rewards them, and knows everything about them, they unintentionally break the Ninth Commandment and set an example of dishonesty.
Children often connect the Santa Claus lie with their faith. When they discover Santa is not real, some begin to question whether Jesus is real as well. Trust is damaged, and spiritual confusion can follow.
Proverbs 19:5 — “A false witness will not go unpunished.”
Many Christian parents unintentionally elevate Santa Claus and the surrounding traditions above Jesus. Children often become far more excited about Santa than about the Savior. Families may skip church entirely during the holiday season, yet make time to visit Santa at the mall.
Santa Claus has become, for many children, a godlike figure — one who knows everything about them, judges their behavior, and rewards them accordingly. This is a distortion of biblical truth and a distraction from Christ.
Scripture never commands Christians to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Instead, God warns against adopting religious festivals He did not establish. The Bible clearly states that God hates man‑made religious celebrations that replace His appointed Holy Days.
Leviticus 23:2 — “These are MY appointed festivals… which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.”
Isaiah 1:14 — “Your New Moons and YOUR appointed feasts My soul hates.”
Leviticus 23 lists God’s true Holy Days. Christmas and Easter are not among them. They were created by men and filled with pagan customs. Should Christians celebrate God’s Holy Days instead of man‑made holidays?

Many churches place decorated evergreen trees near the altar during Christmas. Yet Scripture warns against planting trees near God’s altar — even temporarily.
Deuteronomy 16:21 — “Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any trees near unto the altar of the Lord thy God.”
The early Christian church never used pagan customs to celebrate Jesus’ birth — because they did not celebrate His birth at all. Many of today’s traditions were adopted centuries later, largely to appease pagan converts who wanted to keep their familiar winter festivals.
God warns that He will punish those who follow pagan customs, participate in pagan worship ceremonies, or fill their homes with deceit — including the Santa Claus lie.
Zephaniah 1:8–9 — “I will punish… all those following pagan customs… those who participate in pagan worship ceremonies… and those who fill their masters’ houses with deceit.”
Malachi 3:6 — “For I am the Lord, I do not change.”
God’s warnings against pagan practices applied thousands of years ago — and they still apply today. He does not change.
The Bible never commands Christians to celebrate Jesus’ birth. The Nativity has nothing in common with the modern Christmas holiday, which is filled with pagan customs, commercialism, and traditions that distract from Christ.
Modern “X‑mas” celebrations often promote greed, materialism, overeating, drinking, and self‑indulgence — all of which God condemns. These practices do not honor Christ and are not rooted in Scripture.
Some Christians point to certain Bible passages as justification for celebrating Christmas. But do these verses actually teach that Christians should observe this holiday?

No. Scripture never commands or endorses celebrating Jesus’ birth, and the apostles did not observe Christmas.
No. The early Christian church did not celebrate Jesus’ birthday, and Christmas was not observed for centuries after the apostles.
No. Scripture never gives a date for Jesus’ birth. December 25th originated in pagan winter festivals and was adopted centuries later, not from the Bible.
Yes. Many modern Christmas customs—including evergreen trees, gift-giving, wreaths, and December 25th celebrations—originated in ancient pagan religions and were later blended into Christian tradition.
Yes. Scripture repeatedly warns against adopting pagan practices in worship, including in Deuteronomy 12, Jeremiah 10, and Zephaniah 1:8–9. God commands His people not to mix pagan customs with worship of Him.
No. Romans 14 addresses personal matters of eating and fasting, not adopting pagan worship customs. Scripture never permits using pagan practices to honor God, and Romans 14 does not override God’s commands against mixing worship with pagan traditions.
According to Scripture, participating in pagan customs is forbidden and displeasing to God. The Bible teaches that God does not accept worship mixed with pagan traditions, regardless of sincere intentions.
