Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Halloween is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world, yet its origins and themes raise serious questions for Christians. While many view it as harmless fun, Scripture warns believers to avoid practices connected to darkness, witchcraft, and the occult. This study examines what the Bible actually says about Halloween, where the holiday came from, and whether followers of Jesus should take part in traditions rooted in paganism and spiritual deception.

What Does the Bible Say About Halloween?

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween in Any Way?

If you find this Halloween Bible study helpful, you may also want to explore what the Bible says about other holidays. Things are not always what they seem — and Scripture often reveals a very different picture.

Each year on October 31st, millions celebrate Halloween — historically known as “The Festival of the Dead.” Witches observe it as the Feast of Samhain, their New Year’s first feast, when they attempt to communicate with the dead through divination. Occultists carve frightening faces into pumpkins to ward off evil spirits.

Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, openly stated that participating in Halloween — even in costume — symbolically dedicates oneself to Satan. He expressed delight that Christian parents allow their children to “worship the devil” one day a year.

John Ramirez, a former Satanist, confirmed these claims. He warned that even dressing as an angel on Halloween gives the enemy an opportunity to influence a person’s identity. He revealed that Halloween carries spiritual realities unknown to most Christians.

What Is the Christian View on Trick‑or‑Treating?

Is “Trunk‑or‑Treat” OK?

On Halloween, children and adults dress as witches, demons, zombies, and other occult figures. Even well‑meaning Christians participate in the darkness of Satan’s world by imitating evil — the opposite of God’s image.

Is this harmless fun? Does God care if we imitate evil for entertainment? Scripture gives a clear answer.

Halloween encourages deception — pretending to be witches, devils, and demons. But Scripture warns that Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

2 Corinthians 11:14 — “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”

What Is the Biblical Perspective on Halloween?

What Are God’s Plain Words About Pagan Holidays?

Halloween centers on witches, devils, and demons — all of which God condemns. The early church rejected occult practices so strongly that believers burned their books of magic.

Isaiah 1:14 — “Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being.”

God hates man‑made pagan festivals. That alone should cause Christians to avoid Halloween entirely.

Zephaniah 1:8 — “I will punish all those following pagan customs.”

Scripture warns that God will punish those who follow pagan customs — including Halloween.

Here is more of what the Bible says about witchcraft and sorcery:

The Bible Plainly Says We Should Resist Evil

Can We Resist Evil and Participate in It at the Same Time?

Satan is our enemy and seeks to destroy us. Participating in pagan customs — especially on a day dedicated to darkness — gives him an opportunity to influence our lives.

Christians are called to be the light of the world — not imitators of darkness.

Matthew 5:14–16 — “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others.”

Participating in Halloween promotes witchcraft, divination, and darkness. For a follower of Jesus, the answer is clear: be a light — not a participant in darkness.
