Once Saved Always Saved: Can a Christian Lose Salvation?

Millions of Christians have heard the phrase “Once Saved Always Saved,” the idea that once a person accepts Christ, their salvation can never be lost. This teaching is comforting and widely repeated, but is it what the Bible actually says? Scripture contains both strong promises of assurance and serious warnings about falling away, departing from the faith, and the need to endure to the end. This study examines what the Bible truly teaches about eternal security and whether a Christian can lose salvation.

Can A Christian Ever Lose Their Salvation?

What Does The Bible Say About Unconditional Eternal Security?

Consider this example and ask yourself whether a person who once genuinely accepted Jesus—but later rejected Him—would still be guaranteed eternal security. Many churches teach that such a person remains saved no matter what. But is that what the Bible says?

A gang member once sincerely accepted Jesus, was filled with the Holy Spirit, baptized, and lived as a faithful Christian. But after severe trials, bitterness, and tragedy, he turned away from God, returned to crime, and ultimately rejected Jesus entirely. Is he still “once saved always saved”? Scripture gives us the answer.

What Does The Bible Say About The “If” Condition For Eternal Security?

Is There Something Required Of A Christian After Accepting Jesus?

The Bible repeatedly ties salvation to an IF condition. Salvation is a free gift, but continuing in salvation requires endurance, obedience, and faithfulness. Human beings retain free will even after conversion—we can still choose to obey or disobey God.

Hebrews 6:4–6 and Hebrews 10:26–29 are two of the clearest warnings in Scripture. They show that real Christians—those who have received the Holy Spirit—can fall away and reach a point where repentance is no longer possible.

Hebrews 6:4–6 — “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened… IF they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance…”

These are true believers who fell away. The Bible says it is impossible to renew them. This is not “once saved always saved.”

What Does the Bible Say About Eternal Security?

Hebrews 10:26–29 warns that if Christians deliberately continue sinning, “no sacrifice for sins is left.” These are believers who were sanctified by Christ’s blood, yet they can still lose salvation through willful rebellion.

The difference between sinning willingly (out of weakness) and sinning willfully (deliberate rebellion) is crucial. God forgives weakness, but He will not grant eternal life to those who knowingly reject Him.

What Does the Bible Say?

1 Timothy 4:1 — “Some will depart from the faith…”
Hebrews 10:38–39 — “If any man draw back…”
2 Peter 1:10 — “…if you practice these qualities you will never fall.”
Colossians 1:21–23 — “…IF you continue in the faith…”

These verses show that Christians can fall away, draw back, or turn aside. Eternal security is conditional—not automatic.

What Does The Bible Say About The Perseverance Of The Saints?

What Happens If A Christian Doesn’t Always Endure To The End?

James 1:12 — “Blessed is the man that endures temptation… he shall receive the crown of life.”
Revelation 2:10 — “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
2 John 1:8 — “Look to yourselves, that you may not lose what you have worked for…”

These verses show that salvation requires endurance. Christians can lose their reward if they do not remain faithful.

What Does the Bible Say About Eternal Security?

Revelation 3:5 — “I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life.”
Psalm 69:27–28 — “…let them be blotted out of the book of the living…”

Names can be blotted out of the Book of Life. This alone disproves unconditional eternal security.

What Does The Bible Say About Being Predestined?

Does This Mean You Can Never Reject Jesus?

Ephesians 1:4–5 speaks of being chosen and predestined, but predestination refers to the timing of our calling, not the guarantee of salvation. God does not force anyone to accept or remain faithful.

Romans 8:38–39 says nothing can separate us from God’s love—but it does not say we cannot separate ourselves through willful rebellion.

Salvation is a process that will be completed “at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). We are not saved now—we are being saved.

What Does The Bible Really Say About “Once Saved Always Saved”?

Is This Truly A Biblical Teaching?

Scripture shows that salvation is a future event. We “shall be saved” if we endure to the end. Until then, we can fall away, draw back, or turn aside.

Only after the resurrection—when we are changed into glorified spirit beings—can we finally say we are truly “Once Saved Always Saved.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bible teach Once Saved Always Saved?

The Bible teaches assurance for believers who remain in Christ, but it does not teach unconditional eternal security. Scripture includes many warnings about falling away and departing from the faith.

Can a Christian lose salvation?

Yes. The Bible shows that believers can turn away, fall from grace, shipwreck their faith, or become cut off through unbelief. Salvation is secure in Christ, but not unconditional.

What does the Bible say about falling away?

Passages such as Hebrews 6:4–6, Hebrews 10:26–31, and 2 Peter 2:20–22 warn that believers can fall away and face judgment if they turn back from following Christ.

What about verses that promise security?

Security passages promise that no outside force can separate believers from Christ. They do not teach that a believer cannot choose to depart from the faith through unbelief or rebellion.

What does it mean to endure to the end?

Jesus taught that only those who endure to the end will be saved. Endurance is the evidence of genuine faith, and Scripture calls believers to remain faithful until Christ returns.
